May is all action - the snow has melted and the ground is no longer frozen so it is time to get as much done as possible.

2021-09 (September) Preparation for winter
27 photos
This month was a race to get outside things done before the start of the winter rains and frost that would prevent further groundwork and outdoor maintenance. We got all the drainage around the garage complete and another lorry of gravel was used. I triggered some pain in my back from too much digging and had to take it more careful. Our Solar installation was approved by the electric company, and could start decreasing the electricity bills. The expected pay back period is 9 years.

Finishing the paths and external doors, and early work to prepare for the upcoming mouse-war in October. There were more tasks than we could get done in the time needed, and I had to be careful of my back due to previous injury.

The Food Cellar Repair
3 photos
56 photos in 7 sub-albumsAfter watching loads of Americans on YouTube laying concrete floors I was itching to have a go at repairing the old food cellar. It went ok, and it is now a usable room, and the new floor is robust, but there were some mistakes I made along the way that I will learn from.

2021-07 (July) Making longer term plans
22 photos
Although we were trying to get a lot done in the garden, July was sometimes too hot to work outside. I did a basement painting project just to be somewhere cool. After injuring my back last month it was awesome when a little digger came to deliver the woodchips for a side-path and had time to cut the turf for the major path as well. The digger sloped the paths perfectly, made it an even width, and piled all the earth up neatly. It must have saved one to three months of digging by hand. We also visited the nearest city to be fingerprinted for residency, and I took the long term decision to invest in a Solar array, which will take about 9 years to pay for itself.

2021-06 (June) Holiday
19 photos
I had saved up all my holiday and took June off work to try and get the garden made while the weather was good. I dont remember the exact order but I put the final layer of self levelling concrete on the food cellar floor, built the raised beds, workrd on makign the garden path, and rebuilt and painted the garage door. Although I got a lot done it didn't entirely go to plan. I think I did a bit too much. One day I got out of a chair and collapsed from back pain and couldn't stand. I crawled down the stairs and got help from my girlfriend. It seemes I had herniated a disc and had to spend the next two weeks using skipoles to move around as it hurt a lot whenever I straightened my back, sat down, stood up, or reached with my arm.

2021-05 (May) Permission to Stay
11 photos
Halfway through this month we got the notification that a decision had been made on if we could stay. The letter with the actual decision took a bit longer, but it was a massive stress-relief to be told to go book an appointment and get fingerprinted for our new residency status.
