2022-04 Roof Ladder Replacement

With the snow disappearing, we could start work outdoors on the property. This month I was also getting refunded from a complicated dual-country tax situation that I had had to overpay, so I could now afford to invest in addressing any safety issues and any preventative maintenance needed.

New Roof Access Ladder

The first year we had a chimney inspection done, and the chimney inspector had been annoyed by the poor state of the roof ladder mounting points. The placement of the roof ladder access was also a problem. We got a quote for a new roof ladder and platform. My instruction was to do a great job so we didn’t have to do it again. We also took the opportunity to put the ladder on the northwestern side of the house. This means if we want to add solar to the southeast-facing side there will be more surface area available.

Mini Oven

We started using a mini oven for small cooking projects. I took a photo when my girlfriend was making cookies.

Wood Storage Rack

It was sunny and so I could work outdoors on the deck. I was making uprights for a wood storage rack.

Protection For Raised Beds

Last year we had problems with birds digging up vegetables. I added frames to the raised beds which we intended to hand some kind of mesh on. This was a bit of an experiment to see what worked.

Basement Wall Investigation

I also dug a hole to investigate the insulation around the basement. It only goes about 10-20cm deep which would not be enough for a modern building. This is an old 1940s house so that isn’t a surprise, but if I am doing any excavations, I can make an effort to improve the insulation.
